Do I need a face mask?
Wearing a face covering (including disposable or reusable face masks) helps keep you and others safe.
Face coverings help stop droplets spreading between people when someone speaks, laughs, coughs, or sneezes. This includes when someone who might be ill, but feels well or is unaware that they are ill.
If you live in Victoria, current government restrictions require that due to coronavirus (COVID-19), you must wear a face covering when you leave your home, unless you have a lawful excuse or exemption. For more information, please check the website for the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services. For the rest of the country, wearing a face covering or mask remains highly recommended for preventing or limiting transmission of viruses where you are unable to distance yourself from other people outside your household.
In addition to wearing a face covering, the best way to protect other people against coronavirus is keeping 1.5 metres apart, wash your hands often, and cough or sneeze into your elbow or tissue. Face coverings are an additional protective physical barrier to protect you and your loved ones.
